Dog-friendly Algarve
Every place in the Algarve we have visited and filmed with Aba, our rescue dog, with our verdict on visiting with a dog. Each guide is written from our own videos.
Portugal's south coast: golden cliffs, lagoons and the busiest beaches in the country, especially in summer.
With Aba we found the crowded resort towns hard work (Lagos) and liked Olhão as a base, with the Salinas and the Ria Formosa islands close by.
Olhão & Ria FormosaOlhão is our favourite base in the Algarve for a dog. The town is small, busy and welcoming, and you can walk everywhere. The Salinas give Aba a quick off-leash loop close to the centre. The real draw is the islands of the Ria Formosa, with kilometres of empty beach. You need a transport box for the ferry, though. Dog-friendly hotels are the weak spot, and rain cuts your walking options fast.

LagosWe found Lagos beautiful and full of history. With Aba it was hard work. The city is packed even off-season, the small city beaches are too crowded for a real break, and most hotels set strict weight limits, often under 10 kilos. We did find good space at Meia Praia and on the cliffs at Ponta da Piedade. Our advice is to visit Lagos as a day trip or a two to three day stay, not as the base for a long holiday.
