Sightseeing: history and Ponta da Piedade
Lagos is an old maritime town with more than 2000 years of history. It was the gateway for Portuguese explorers mapping the African coast. It also has a dark chapter: in 1444 it was the site of colonial Europe's first slave market. For us, the real draw is Ponta da Piedade and its rock formations. These are sea pillars, arches and grottos cut into golden limestone cliffs by the Atlantic.
Eating out around the crowds
There are plenty of bars and restaurants in Lagos, mostly around the main square and the marina. The problem is the crowds. In high season the central spots are very cramped, and even off-season everywhere is packed. With Aba, it worked best when we found quieter places just off the main square, or ate earlier in the evening before the main rush.
City beaches and Park da Cidade
The small beaches right in town, like Praia de Batata and Praia dos Estudantes, are beautiful. They are also very small and extremely crowded, especially in summer. They work for a quick pause from the city with your dog, but not for a real break or off-leash time.
Along the old city walls there is a small park, Park da Cidade, where you and your dog can take a break in the shade. If you like birds, hoopoes and magpies live there. They sit still until you get your camera out, and then do everything they can to avoid being photographed.
Off-leash at Meia Praia
For off-leash time and longer walks we recommend Meia Praia, about five minutes by car from the city. It is quite crowded even off-season. From November to April, dogs are officially allowed on the beach. To avoid the crowds, go very early or very late for a proper walk.
Cliff walk at Ponta da Piedade
At Ponta da Piedade, do the opposite of Meia Praia. The cliffs are the main tourist attraction in Lagos, and at sunrise and sunset crowds of people come to take photos. During the day you can have a long, relaxed walk here with your dog. There are some areas where you can let your dog off-leash safely without worrying about the steep cliffs. The view is amazing.
Where we stayed and getting around
Finding a place to stay with a big dog in Lagos is hard. Most hotels have strict weight limits, often under 10 kilos. Holiday rentals are the main option, but book far ahead and expect high dog fees. We stayed at Cascade Wellness Resort. It also has a weight limit, which we missed when booking. The staff were friendly and welcomed us anyway, even though Aba is clearly not an 8 kilo dog.
We paid a 25 euro nightly dog fee and a 100 euro damage deposit, and we thought it was worth it. The resort sits right at Ponta da Piedade, so a great walk starts from the door. Lagos has several vets, pet stores and large supermarkets. The centre is walkable, but you need a car to reach the quieter, dog-friendly coast. There is a train station with links to Faro and Lisbon.

Lagos with a dog: questions
Are dogs allowed on Meia Praia in Lagos?
Yes, from November to April dogs are officially allowed on Meia Praia. It's our pick in Lagos for off-leash fun and longer walks, about five minutes by car from the city. Meia Praia is quite crowded even off-season, so we'd go very early or very late.
When is the best time to walk a dog at Ponta da Piedade in Lagos?
We'd walk Ponta da Piedade during the day and avoid sunrise and sunset, when people come in masses to take pictures. In the daytime you can have a relaxed, longer walk there with your dog. Some areas let you take your dog off-leash safely without worrying about the steep cliffs.
Where can we eat with a dog in Lagos?
Lagos gets crowded, especially near the main square and the marina. What worked best for Aba was finding quieter spots a little way off the main square, or eating earlier in the evening before the main rush.
Is it hard to find accommodation for a big dog in Lagos?
Yes. Most hotels in Lagos have strict weight limits for dogs, often under 10 kilos, so holiday rentals are the main option. Book far in advance and expect high dog fees. We stayed at the Cascade Wellness Resort, which also has a weight limit that we missed when booking. The staff welcomed us anyway. We paid a 25 euro dog fee per night and a 100 euro deposit, and for us it was worth it.
Is Lagos a good base for a longer holiday with a dog?
We don't think so. With Aba, we'd make Lagos a day trip or a short visit of two to three days. Lagos is just too crowded, and accommodation is expensive and hard to find with a big dog.
