Is Parque das Nações good with a dog?

Yes, we loved it with Aba. Off-leash: We found off-leash opportunities in the area. Further along the river there's a small fenced dog park with some agility equipment.

Parque das Nações is one of our favourite places in Lisbon when Aba needs a break from the busy city. Our walk runs from the Iberian lynx through small parks, past the Vasco da Gama Tower and along the Tejo towards the bridge. The streets are clean and there's lots of shade. We also found off-leash opportunities and many other dogs.

Starting at the Iberian lynx

Parque das Nações is one of our favourite city walks for when Aba needs a break from the city. The whole area is surprisingly new. It was completely transformed for Expo 98 into a modern neighbourhood with parks and riverside spaces. We start beside the giant Iberian lynx. From there we walk through a series of small parks towards the Vasco da Gama Tower and the Myriad Hotel.

Small parks and the forbidden water

This first section is already good for a dog. There's plenty to sniff and lots of little green spaces. For Aba, the most important attraction is a decorative water feature, which he clearly sees as his personal forbidden swimming pool. There are also plenty of restaurants and cafes around the park, so the humans can eat while the dog has some fun.

Along the Tejo past the Myriad Hotel

Once we pass the hotel, the route opens up into a beautiful riverside walk along the Tejo. The views across the water and towards the Vasco da Gama Bridge are great. This is usually where we start meeting lots of other dogs out with their humans. The area also has the big Tejo park on top of the many small ones.

Dog park, fountains and shade

A little further along there's a small fenced dog park with some agility equipment. Along the route we found drinking fountains, including some where dogs can get a drink. There's also a lot of natural shade, which definitely helps if you're visiting in summer.

Towards the Vasco da Gama Bridge

We carry on towards the bridge itself and finish near the statue of Catherine of Bragança. If you're a birder, you can leave the big lenses at home. You may see the odd river bird, but this is more of a relaxed waterfront walk than a serious birding spot. For a dog, there's room to sniff and explore, some freedom and new friends to meet.
