Santarém

loved it

Filmed with Aba · on YouTube since July 2026 · written from our own narration, fact-checked against it

Is Santarém good with a dog?

Yes, we loved it with Aba. Off-leash: Most dogs we saw there were on a leash.

Jardim das Portas do Sol is a garden inside the old city walls of Santarém, with one of the best views in the region. We came in summer with Aba and found it the perfect stop. It has shade, room for a gentle walk and two restaurants where you can take a proper break. It is a small park and not a wild adventure. It's a calm city escape with a big view.

Off-leash space
Most dogs we saw there were on a leash.
Shade and heat
There is a lot of natural shade and plenty of places to rest. That matters in Santarém, because summers here get seriously hot.
Paths and terrain
It's a small park with lots for a dog to sniff. The ground was easy on paws, and we didn't find any glass shards.
Crowds
Many other dogs walk here too, so expect to meet other dogs.
Cafés and food
There are two restaurants where you can sit down, eat or drink, and take a proper break.

Santarém and the garden in the old walls

Santarém is a historic mid-sized city on a high plateau above the Tejo River. Expect old streets and churches, good viewpoints and a very Portuguese city center. In summer, expect serious heat too. On hot days we think Jardim das Portas do Sol is one of the best places in town to take a dog. The garden sits inside the old city walls, and it has one of the finest viewpoints in the region.

The walk: shade, sniffing and the view

From the top you look out over the Tejo River and the plains below. The park is not very big, but Aba had plenty to sniff. There's a lot of natural shade and places to rest, and the paths were easy on paws, with no glass shards that we saw. Lots of other dogs walk here too, and most of them were on a leash.

This is a gentle walk, not a wild adventure. For us it worked as a calm escape from the city with a great view. When we wanted a break, the two restaurants gave us somewhere to sit down, eat or drink something, and rest properly.
