Forte da Graça, Elvas

Is Forte da Graça, Elvas good with a dog?

Yes, we loved it with Aba.

Forte da Graça sits on a hill just outside Elvas, and we think it is well worth the trip with a dog. When we visited, dogs were allowed inside, so Aba explored the fortress with us. We didn't have to take turns waiting outside with him. It was clean and paw-friendly, with lots of natural shade, and everyone was kind to him. There is also room outside the walls for a relaxed short walk.

Why the fort sits on this hill

The fort sits high above Elvas, with wide views across the countryside and towards Spain. Its location is exactly why it was built here. Construction began in 1763. Over the following decades it grew into an enormous fortress with several layers of defence, underground passages and barracks. Today it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage fortifications of Elvas.

While you are in Elvas, the aqueduct is also worth a look. It was completed in 1622 and runs for roughly 8 km. Its most spectacular section rises through four levels of arches. It brought water into fortified Elvas and helped the city hold out through longer sieges.

Bringing Aba inside

This is what made the fort special for us. Dogs were allowed inside when we visited, so Aba explored the fortress with us. We didn't have to take turns waiting outside with him. Everyone was very kind about having him there. It was all clean and easy on his paws, and there was plenty of natural shade.

Keep looking up

For fellow birders: bring the big lens. This is griffon vulture and booted eagle territory, so keep looking up. There were also lots of butterflies around. We saw a beautiful scarce swallowtail. It came a bit too close for my taste, but I stayed completely calm. Mostly.

The walk around the fort

Outside the fortress walls there are some nice places to walk. There is enough space for a relaxed short walk, with open views, dry Alentejo landscape and plenty for Aba to sniff. Our verdict: absolutely worth the trip, and even better because there is so much else nearby. You can pair it with a visit to Elvas or Campo Maior.
